She survived poverty, heroin addiction and jail time to become a revered jazz singer. The film follows Anita O’Day’s life, noting a childhood tonsillectomy that removed her uvula, ending vibrato and sustained notes but creating her signature percussive style. Defying that limitation, she built a prolific, acclaimed 20th‑century jazz career.
