Francis Ashby, a senior Oxford don, spends a holiday in the Alps where he meets American Caroline and her adopted Irish‑American companion Elinor. He enjoys their company, especially Elinor’s, and women are drawn to him. When they turn up at Oxford, Ashby learns women are barred from the college grounds and any liaison is frowned upon.
