Pushpa's husband and his new wife force her to leave the house after she refuses to leave voluntarily. Her husband beats her and throws her out, demonstrating her displacement and rejection. She initially seeks help from her mother, but her mother disowns her, deepening her vulnerability.

Desperate and broken, Pushpa tries to take her own life. Soon after, her village-uncle Nepal Babu sells her to a brothel in Calcutta, marking her entry into a life of hardship. Her circumstances depict her tragic downfall following her social rejection.

During her audition at the brothel, Anand Babu, a lonely businessman seeking love, is attracted by her singing. He begins to visit her regularly, establishing a deep emotional connection as love starts to blossom between them.

A widowed man and his family, also from Pushpa’s village, move in nearby. Their son Nandu suffers from neglect at home, as his father is busy working and his stepmother is indifferent. Nandu starts interacting with Pushpa, who treats him like her own son.

Noticing Nandu’s mistreatment at home, Pushpa begins to treat him like her own child, offering him love and care. Nandu reciprocates her affection, seeing her as a maternal figure, and befriends Anand Babu, who quickly becomes fond of him.

Pushpa’s brother-in-law arrives and demands that she stop visiting Anand Babu. Reluctantly, Pushpa obeys and prevents Anand Babu from seeing her. This separation deepens Anand Babu’s realization of his love for Pushpa.

When Nandu falls ill and requires expensive treatment, Pushpa asks Anand Babu for help. He secretly pays for Nandu’s treatment, emphasizing their unspoken bond and the idea that some relationships transcend names. This act of kindness reveals his true feelings.

The doctor reveals to Nandu’s father that Pushpa paid for his medical treatment. Touched, Nandu’s father thanks her and gifts her a sari, acknowledging her as a true family member despite her social status. Pushpa gratefully accepts this gesture.

Before Nandu and his family move back to the village, Nandu plants a night-flowering jasmine at Pushpa’s home, symbolizing hope and their bond. He vows to always care for the plant, mirroring his love for Pushpa.

Time jumps forward, and Nandu grows up to become a government engineer. He is posted in the same town, and his childhood connection to Pushpa remains a significant part of his life. Meanwhile, Pushpa is working as a mistreated maidservant.

Anand Babu, having stopped his destructive habits and separated from his wife, reunites with Pushpa and they rekindle their relationship. They remember their past and express happiness to be together once again, feeling peaceful and loved.

Nandu, now grown, searches for Pushpa but initially fails to find her despite inquiries in the neighborhood. He remains determined, reflecting his enduring love and longing for his maternal figure.

Nandu’s son becomes sick, prompting them to visit the doctor. During their visit, Anand Babu, now aware of Pushpa’s situation, learns more about her life and reconnects with her after many years.

Both men come together at the doctor’s clinic and discover Pushpa was being ill-treated. They stand by her and show their affection, ultimately facilitating her reunion with Nandu, who treats her as his mother once more.

In a heartfelt ending, Nandu takes Pushpa home, symbolically reuniting their mother-son bond. Anand Babu witnesses the reunion tearfully, feeling happiness and closure for their long-separated relationships.
