Pushpa’s life takes a tragic turn when she is expelled from her home by her husband and his new wife. Despite her refusal to leave, her husband becomes violent, resorting to physical abuse before casting her out. Seeking refuge, she turns to her mother, only to be disowned, leaving her feeling completely abandoned. Facing despair, Pushpa attempts to end her life, but her journey into hardship continues when her village-uncle, Nepal Babu, sells her to a brothel in Calcutta. There, her talent for singing draws the attention of Anand Babu, a Raajesh Khanna, a businessman who is seeking love and companionship. During her audition at the kotha, Anand Babu is captivated by her voice and quickly becomes a regular visitor, developing feelings for her despite his own unhappy marriage and loneliness.
As their bond deepens, a widowed man from her village, along with his family, moves nearby. His son, Nandu, played by Vinod Mehra, has a troubled home life—his father works tirelessly, leaving little time for him, and his stepmother shows no affection. Recognizing Nandu’s misery, Pushpa begins caring for him, offering him the affection and comfort he desperately needs. Nandu grows to love Pushpa as a maternal figure and visits her daily, while Anand Babu, seeing Nandu’s bond with Pushpa, also begins to treat the boy with fatherly kindness, calling him “Pushpa’s son” and nurturing the paternal relationship.
Trouble arises when Anand Babu’s Satyendra Kapoor brother-in-law visits, demanding Pushpa tell Anand Babu to stop his visits, fearing social stigma and judgment. Reluctantly, Pushpa warns Anand Babu and keeps him away, which leads to the heartbreaking realization for him—his love for Pushpa has grown deeper. Despite their separation, Anand Babu remains deeply connected to her, and when Nandu falls ill with a high fever, Pushpa reaches out for help. Anand Babu discreetly finances Nandu’s treatment, emphasizing that some bonds are beyond words with his quiet act of kindness, telling the doctor that “some relationships have no names.”
When Nandu’s father learns that Pushpa paid for his son’s medical care, he is overwhelmed with gratitude and gifts her the sari he bought for his wife as a token of appreciation. Moved, Pushpa accepts this gesture with tears of emotion. Nandu’s family eventually moves back to their village, and Nandu plants a night-flowering jasmine sapling at Pushpa’s home, promising to always care for it—a symbol of their enduring bond.
Years pass, and Nandu, now a grown man and a government engineer, returns to the same town. He seeks out Pushpa, who has fallen into hardship, working as a maidservant subjected to mistreatment. Their reunion is heartfelt, and they rekindle their connection. Meanwhile, Anand Babu, now divorced due to his wife’s partying lifestyle, has changed his ways and is happily settled in his love for Pushpa. When he learns Nandu is in town, he reunites with him at the doctor’s office. The story culminates with Nandu, unable to bear seeing Pushpa suffering, taking her into his care, like a son reclaiming his long-lost mother, as Anand Babu observes with tears of joy.
The narrative beautifully explores themes of resilience, unconditional love, sacrifice, and redemption, illustrating that some bonds are stronger than societal norms or circumstances.
