In 1865, Aubrey Filmore works as a bellboy at the Palmer Hotel in St. Louis and nourishes a bold, if risky, dream: to work as a spy for the federal government. He reaches out to Colonel George Coulouris as part of the Secret Service, hoping to join their elite unit, but his pitch meets a firm refusal from the colonel, leaving Aubrey to navigate his ambitions on his own.

A city-wide wave of warnings sweeps through posters that announce a cunning spy known as the Grey Spider. When Major Jack Drumman arrives to stay at the hotel, Aubrey discovers that this imposing figure is the Grey Spider himself. The major menacingly traps Aubrey and tries to coerce him into wearing Confederate clothes to resemble the Grey Spider, aiming to shoot him as a spy. Before the plan can unfold, Aubrey manages to knock Drumman unconscious, shifting the balance of peril in an instant.

Into this maelstrom steps Sallyann Weatharby, a captivating ally who awakens Aubrey’s heart. Arlene Dahl makes her entrance as Sallyann, and Aubrey finds himself drawn to her even as danger closes in. Seizing the moment, Aubrey agrees to join Sallyann, posing as Drumman to attend a meeting with a group of important Confederate spies, all while the war drums beat on the horizon.

Before Aubrey can retreat to safety, he leaves a message for Baker, signaling the real purpose of his risky gambit. He becomes entangled in a tangled scheme designed to intercept Union forces, and he is handed a crucial mission: to deliver the Union battle plans to Confederate General Watkins Minor Watson. The rendezvous point is Morgan’s Landing, a hospital near the front lines, where Aubrey must meet Sallyann and continue his covert chain of communications.

Back at the hotel, Aubrey returns to Colonel Baker with the plans and becomes part of a delicate ruse. He helps craft fake plans to replace the real ones, all while remaining in the precarious role of Drumman and continuing to deliver instructions to a Union spy. The situation grows chaotic as Aubrey mixes up the plans and instructions, and the tension rises as both Confederate and Union uniforms collide in close quarters. A volley of gunfire erupts, and Aubrey is knocked unconscious, carried to Morgan’s Landing, where Sallyann is waiting as promised.

Sallyann’s fiancé, Kurt Devlynn, who is also a spy, arrives on the scene. Sallyann, torn by love for Aubrey, confesses that her affections now rest with Drumman. When Aubrey regains consciousness, he discovers the lost instructions and escapes the hospital, leaving Kurt’s scheming plotted behind him.

Kurt circularly rallies his men to don Union uniforms and intercept Aubrey, whom they believe to be Drumman, to seize the plans. The action shifts to Sallyann’s father’s plantation, where a mix-up causes Aubrey to deliver spy instructions instead of the actual plans. Union spies take the plans, Confederate spies recover them, and General Watkins receives them while Aubrey’s Union contact, Captain Lorford Lloyd Gough, receives the accompanying instructions.

That night, as Aubrey is courting Sallyann, he should be quietly stealing the plans from the General. The Confederates, convinced they’ve cornered a Union spy in their midst, set a trap—but the trap catches the real Grey Spider, Drumman, instead of Aubrey. The house buzzes with the possibility of capture, yet Aubrey remains elusive, his identity still cloaked in subterfuge.

With the dust of deception momentarily clearing, Aubrey finally obtains the plans from General Watkins. Just then, Drumman’s father appears and exposes Aubrey’s true ruse, thrusting him into immediate peril. Brought outside to face execution for treason, Aubrey’s fate seems sealed, but Sallyann intervenes at the last moment to save him, and the narrative closes with the war’s end signaling a cautious, hard-won victory and a future that remains uncertain but hopeful for those who dared to gamble on a dangerous dream.
