Roger Pratt and his band ambush a stagecoach, killing the driver and the passengers, including a priest and a young woman. The man Pratt expected to meet on the route is not present, so he shoots the informant anyway. The violence establishes the ruthless tone of Pratt's pursuit that will unfold across the film.

Tim arrives by horse after the ambush and starts digging graves for the victims. He works under the watchful eyes of Pratt’s men, who linger at the scene. The burial marks Tim’s first direct involvement in the revenge plot.

Harry notices the atrocity, approaches the scene, and offers help. After aiding Tim briefly, he rides away without a word, leaving an uneasy impression. The moment foreshadows a complicated alliance to come.

Tim later spots Harry among gold miners in a saloon and exposes the games as crooked. Harry refuses to draw against the gambler, proving he carries no gun and is wary of violence. A brawl erupts and the two are beaten out of the saloon.

Harry confesses he has gold tucked away in his underwear. Tim suggests depositing it in a bank at Pueblo City, thinking it could finance their next move. The idea tightens their uneasy partnership and sets their next steps in motion.

Tim and accomplices convince Harry that a shack in Pueblo City is a temporary bank office. When Harry loses his deposit slip and returns for it, they have vanished with the money, leaving him cheated and exposed. The betrayal deepens Harry’s mistrust and the stakes rise.

Harry confronts Tim at a market; Tim explains he invested his share in a tent and water basin for a mermaid show. The upset Harry destroys the tent and basin, crying that he intended to use the gold to buy cattle for a ranch. Tim leaves, promising to help him recover what he can.

They try to run a fake telegraph service to scam money but have to escape Pratt’s gang. While hiding in a funeral procession, Tim hints to the widow that the dead man was a famous bank robber and that the loot is buried under a tree, manipulating the widow to reveal the truth.

At night, Harry digs a deep hole while Tim seduces the widow to keep up the deception. When locals reveal the truth, Harry breaks into the house and a fight erupts, and the widow runs outside in her underwear calling for the sheriff. The ruse collapses as heat rises.

In jail, Harry has money for bail, and Tim convinces him to pay for both to help them escape Pratt’s gang. They slip out at night, but the gang tracks them down, beats them, and strings Harry up in a tree. Tim eventually intervenes to help his partner survive.

Tim bursts out that he is the gunfighter Billy Boy, a man who had a run-in with Pratt’s father and killed two of Pratt’s brothers. Harry realizes the depth of Tim’s past and the nature of their alliance shifts. The revelation deepens their uneasy bond and raises the stakes.

The pair encounter a Wells Fargo wagon carrying gold from a mine. Frank Benton pushes for robbing the wagon; Billy opposes the fixed plan, and Benton is killed by Billy, leaving Tim and Harry to escape the pursuing posse with no gold.

The inherited ranch turns out to be a run-down shack, which they begin repairing. Pratt the older joins with his son and a new gang to attack the house, besieging it with dynamite and gunfire. A dramatic siege tests their partnership and resolve.

During the assault, an explosion scatters the action and Harry disappears while trying to save the rabbits. Billy traps Pratt’s father, shoots them, and secures control of the property. Harry later reappears, and Billy says the house can be rebuilt by Harry, but that he must go; Harry chooses to accompany him, signaling a new shared future.
