During World War II, after Czechoslovakia is divided into the Slovak State and the Protectorate of Bohemia‑Moravia, former pilot Viktor Lesa is employed by the Slovak Railway Mail. While making regular trips to the border town of Ludendorf (formerly Bfeclav), he redirects a crucial package to impress a young female co‑worker. When the Gestapo arrives, Viktor and a Jewish clerk, Ticháček, are forced to flee. They escape on a cargo train toward Slovakia and then plot to cross the Danube into Hungary, hoping to find safety.
