To glimpse eighteenth‑century America through a woman’s perspective, historian Laurel Thatcher Ulrich spent eight years decoding the extensive, cryptic diary of Martha Ballard, an 18th‑century midwife and healer. The film weaves Ballard’s daily life and medical practice with Ulrich’s twentieth‑century research, illuminating women and their world.
