A Knight's War

William decides to impersonate Sir Ector because the death of his master leaves him and the other squires destitute and without a future. With Sir Ector gone, they have no protector or means of income. William sees the tournament armor as their only chance to survive and potentially win the prize money that could change their lives.

Earlier, the squires are shown mourning their master's death and worrying about their uncertain futures.

William enters the tournaments by obtaining a forged patent of nobility from Geoffrey Chaucer. This document creates a fake identity for William as 'Sir Ulrich von Liechtenstein' from Gelderland, allowing him to compete despite only being a squire. This lie is essential to his entire journey.

Sir Thomas Colville is actually Prince Edward, the heir to the English throne. He competes in tournaments anonymously to earn glory through his own merits rather than his royal status. When William faces him, Colville withdraws after being injured, and later it is revealed that Count Adhemar knew his true identity all along.

Despite being weakened, William straps the lance to his arm with help from Wat and charges at Adhemar with determination. He ultimately defeats Adhemar, unhorsing him in a triumphant final pass that echoes the phrase 'weighed, measured, and found wanting.'
