In 1971 Moldova, the First and Second Secretaries of the Communist Party prepare for a visit by Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev, a close friend of the Second Secretary. Poor musician Lautar asks the local gypsy baron for his daughter's hand. The baron agrees only if Lautar obtains Brezhnev’s limousine as a wedding gift and secures the leader’s attendance.
