Jack B. Nife, a children's author, starts to spiral after the breakdown of his marriage. This emotional turmoil leads him to obsessively fixate on serial killers, particularly those who operated in the Victorian era.

As Jack immerses himself in writing *Decades of Death*, his paranoia grows. He becomes increasingly convinced that he is being watched and hunted, with the **Hanoi Handshake Killer** being the source of his terror.

Clare Higgins, Jack's agent, bursts into his life with news that **Harvey Humphries**, the head of BBC scripts, wants to meet him. With rising dread, Jack prepares for this crucial meeting, believing Humphries may embody pure evil.

In an attempt to present himself well for the meeting with Humphries, Jack resorts to stuffing his clothes into the oven. This bizarre method backfires when he accidentally super-glues a carving knife to his hand, intensifying his anxiety.
