A Different Man

Edward Lemuel struggles with neurofibromatosis, resulting in a disfigured facial appearance that greatly impacts his confidence. This condition has hindered his acting career, leaving him feeling isolated and insecure about his future.

Edward befriends his new neighbor, Ingrid Vold, who is an aspiring playwright. Despite their growing friendship, Edward feels unable to express his romantic feelings for her, creating tension and uncertainty between them.

Edward undergoes an experimental medical treatment that miraculously cures his neurofibromatosis. With his newfound confidence, he adopts the false identity of 'Guy Moratz' and publicly claims that his former self, Edward, has committed suicide.

As 'Guy Moratz', Edward finds success as a wealthy real estate agent, living a life that contrasts sharply with his former struggles. However, his past continues to haunt him, especially when he learns about Ingrid's new play based on his life.

Ingrid is producing an off-Broadway play titled 'Edward', inspired by Edward's life. Seizing the opportunity, Edward auditions and is oddly cast in the lead role, deepening his complicated feelings for Ingrid while still hiding his true identity.

As rehearsals progress, Edward and Ingrid begin a sexual relationship, though Ingrid remains unaware that 'Guy' is actually Edward. This deception adds layers of complexity to their relationship, as Edward grapples with his hidden identity.

Oswald, a man with neurofibromatosis, visits during rehearsals and quickly charms the cast. Edward feels threatened by Oswald's outgoing nature and his burgeoning connection with Ingrid, sparking jealousy and discomfort.

Ingrid ultimately decides to recast Oswald in the lead role after noticing Edward's struggles with memorizing his lines. The decision devastates Edward and marks a turning point in his mental state as he grapples with feelings of inadequacy.

The play opens to great acclaim, and Oswald's performance earns rave reviews. Edward's envy and mental deterioration escalate as he can't accept being overshadowed by Oswald's talent and bond with Ingrid.

In a fit of rage, Edward storms the stage during a performance and physically confronts Oswald. This explosive encounter leads to a tragic accident where part of the set collapses, resulting in serious injuries to Edward.

After sustaining multiple fractures, Edward returns to his old apartment while recovering from his injuries. During this time, he discovers that Ingrid and Oswald are growing closer and making plans to adapt 'Edward' into a film.

Enraged by his situation and spurred on by a conversation with his physical therapist who disparages Oswald, Edward stabs Oswald, leading to his arrest and imprisonment. This violent act marks a stark descent into violence for Edward.

Years pass, and an aged Edward crosses paths with Oswald once again. He joins Oswald and Ingrid, who are now a successful creative couple planning their retirement, highlighting the stark contrast to Edward's life.

During a tense dinner, Edward struggles to fit into the social dynamic, feeling out of place among the accomplished duo. Oswald makes light-hearted jokes, but Edward's anxiety hints that he remains deeply affected by the events of the past.

As the waiter arrives to take their orders, Edward's nervousness becomes palpable, serving as a poignant reminder of how much he has changed and yet remained the same. Oswald's jest about Edward's unchanged nature underlines the complexity of their intertwined lives.
