Her parents are both serving in the U.S. Army—her mother a helicopter pilot and her father a Special Forces Ranger. Initially isolated, she befriends Savanah, a girl coping with the loss of her father, who died in Iraq. Despite their differing styles, Dusty, a cowgirl, and Savanah, with a Goth aesthetic, forge a strong bond. Dusty rallies the school to create an Equestrian Drill Team, inviting her new friends to join, while also confronting anxieties about her mother's deployment to Afghanistan.
