The Kazakh village of Karatas is controlled by the ruthless criminal boss Poshaev, who maintains order through a combination of providing jobs and jobs and swift, brutal punishment. When Arzu’s wife informs the police about Poshaev’s crimes, he finds himself a crippled, grieving father raising his young daughter alone. Poshaev surprisingly takes Arzu under his protection, offering him a position as a guard. As Arzu proves his loyalty and rises to become Poshaev’s right-hand man, the question becomes whether his allegiance lies with his boss or with a pursuit of justice.
