Coolie No. 1

Pandit Jai Kishen, Javed Jaffrey, arrives at the Rozario household with a prospective groom for Sarah Rozario, Sara Ali Khan. But the moment Jeffrey Rozario, Paresh Rawal, learns that the candidate’s family isn’t affluent, he openly insults Jai Kishen, triggering a vow from Jai Kishen to teach the proud father a lesson about arrogance and pride.

On a return trip, Jai Kishen crosses paths with Raju, a celebrated railway station porter whose badge reads “Coolie No. 1.” Raju is known among his fellow porters for a recent act of bravery—helping to arrest a drug dealer named Mahesh. As Raju spots a photo of Sarah Rozario and feels drawn to her, Jai Kishen hatches a plan: use the porter’s charm to marry Sarah and, in the process, settle the score with Jeffrey. With Jai Kishen’s scheming and the aid of Deepak Mechanic, Sahil Vaid portrays Raju as Kunwar Raj Pratap Singh, a pretend prince from Singapore, and wins Sarah’s heart. In a charming twist, Sarah’s sister Anju Rozario fades into the picture as Anju, Shikha Talsania, falls for Deepak himself.

As the wedding becomes a reality, Jeffrey believes his daughter will now have a life of wealth, and he pushes forward with plans to secure Anju’s future by marrying her to this supposed prince. However, the truth begins to unravel when Jeffrey travels to town and spots the real Raju—working as a porter—at the train station. He calls out the supposed fraud, but Raju, ever resourceful, improvises a tale that he has a twin brother, Raj, who was disowned by their father for vices like drinking and gambling. Jeffrey, wanting the spectacle to end with the family’s wealth intact, buys the story and moves ahead with a plan to wed Anju to Raju, hoping both daughters will share an extravagant life.

Raju’s life becomes a juggling act: he can be in the city as a porter or as Kunwar Raj Pratap Singh, and Inspector Jagjit Godbole, Johnny Lever, grows more suspicious with every conflicting appearance. To prevent catastrophe, Deepak suggests a drastic measure, and Raju theatrically imagines their world crumbling. He tosses the Coolie No. 1 badge into a car and, with Deepak’s help, drives it off a cliff into a lake. When the car is recovered but there’s no body, the inspector’s doubts fade into certainty: there is more than one person involved in the tale.

Meanwhile, Mahendra Pratap Singh, the patriarch of the family, is targeted by Mahesh Anand Pratap Singh, a criminal element who seeks vengeance. Mahesh, played by Vikas Verma, wounds Mahendra and frames Raju for the crime. The arrest follows, but Raju informs the inspector that Mahendra is alive and in need of medical care. The escape from custody becomes a joint effort between Raju and Deepak, who dress as nurses to ensure Mahendra’s life is saved. In this hospital backdrop, the truth about Raju’s masquerade threatens to surface, and an eventual confrontation with Jeffrey arrives.

In a pivotal moment, Raju confesses the duplicity to Sarah, who chooses to forgive him, recognizing the underlying love rather than the deception. Jeffrey’s arrogance is challenged as Sarah and Anju rally to support the men who have become part of their lives—one a porter, the other a mechanic. Together, they help thwart Mahesh’s murderous scheme and protect Mahendra. When Mahendra regains consciousness, he reveals a father’s gratitude, reaffirming that Raju is like a son to him.

In the final arc, Anju expresses her affection for Deepak, and Jai Kishen arrives to remind Jeffrey that pride in wealth cannot replace the real currency of a happy marriage: love. The story closes on a note that true riches lie not in riches themselves but in the bonds that endure, celebrating a blended family brought together by courage, wit, and a shared commitment to each other.
