What Is Wonder Man About? (No Spoilers)

The plot of Wonder Man (1945) without spoilers: what it is about, who it follows and where it takes place, told without the twists or the ending. Enough to decide whether it is your next watch, not enough to ruin it.

Danny Kaye stars in a buoyant, tongue-in-cheek musical that explores the extraordinary link between two brothers who share a face but live in completely different worlds. On one side is Edwin Dingle, a diligent history student who spends his days buried in quiet manuscripts; on the other is his twin, Buster Dingle, known to the world as Buzzy Bellew, a flamboyant nightclub act who thrives on the applause of the Pelican Club crowd. Their lives have long run on separate tracks, but a twist of fate brings them crashing back together.

The story takes a turn into the supernatural when Buster, having witnessed a murder committed by the ruthless mob boss Ten Grand Jackson, falls victim to the gangster’s goons. Returning as a ghost invisible to everyone but his brother, Buster summons Edwin to the park with a plea for justice. This otherworldly reunion forces the studious Edwin to step out of the library and into the spotlight, tasking him with a mission that blurs the line between the living and the dead.

As Edwin is pulled into the vibrant, chaotic nightlife of the Pelican Club, he must navigate a cascade of comic misadventures while being sporadically influenced by his brother’s outrageous spirit. The stage becomes a place of high-stakes deception, where Edwin must maintain the charade to trap a killer. Meanwhile, the romantic tension rises as Midge Mallon, a performer once close to Buster, finds herself drawn to Edwin, while librarian Ellen Shanley admires his quieter nature. Pulled in different directions by love, duty, and a ghostly guide, Edwin must find a way to bring peace to his brother and order to a world turned upside down.
