In 1929 a Bolshevik officer, married to a young Uzbek woman, is appointed head of a village. Officials in Tashkent urge him to have women drop their chadors but forbid force. When his wife refuses, a 14‑year‑old girl volunteers as an example, angering clergy. The girl is killed and the commissar wounded; his wife nurses him and begs him to leave. He stays, while her father pressures her to keep the veil.
