Following the Civil War, Emmett Murphy returns to his Michigan home seeking solace after the loss of his wife. He honors a promise made to a fallen soldier by taking in a Black widow, Haddie, and her daughter. Their presence challenges the town's prejudices, and a scheme to force them out is devised. Emmett and his family face significant adversity and must find faith and unexpected assistance when a circus arrives.
