Jeff, Jon Heder is an anxious thirty-something who has spent years as the general manager of Winkys World, a dilapidated bowling alley on the outskirts of Chicago. A talented college dropout who left MIT to stay at the bowling alley, he has gone no-contact with his family out of fear of judgment. Despite the creaking routine, Jeff finds a quiet comfort in his work and has even designed an elaborate video game named Wizzing Winkys that mirrors life inside the alley.

Jeff’s world is populated by a tight-knit, if imperfect, crew. Stanford, Brendan Meyer a laid-back nephew of Carl, and Sheila, Candi Milo Carl’s ex-wife and the operations manager, provide a steady rhythm to Winkys’ days. Jeff genuinely connects with regulars and co-workers, but his personal life remains sparse, leaving him with little outside-of-work connection or routine social life.

The calm is upended when Carl, Jim O’Heir—the owner of Winkys World—reveals a troubling plan to sell the arcade within 30 days. Not wanting to lose the sense of belonging he’s nurtured at Winkys, Jeff hatches a bold strategy: stage an elaborate weekend event that he believes will show Carl the lifelike vitality of the place and convince him not to sell. He enlists Stanford to help pull it off, and Sheila does what she can to sway Carl, though her efforts meet resistance.

In a surprising turn, Jeff is visited by his sister Lindy, Anna Konkle, and her friend Samantha, Maya Erskine, who stumble into Jeff’s secret life. They vow to keep everything quiet from the broader family, but Lindy also pushes Jeff to reconnect with their mother, Elizabeth Laidlaw, whose outreach Jeff has been dodging. Initially annoyed by the intrusion, Jeff begins to warm up to his sister and her companion, and a tender, new connection blooms between him and Samantha.

As plans for the weekend event gain momentum, Jeff and Lindy grow closer, and the film threads in a deeper sense of purpose for him. The sisters’ homefront encouragement—especially Lindy’s insistence that Jeff’s choice to leave MIT isn’t something to be ashamed of—begins to reshape his self-image, and he starts to see a path forward that isn’t defined solely by Winkys’ walls. Samantha’s presence adds a hopeful spark; the couple’s chemistry becomes a quiet counterpoint to the looming sale, even as Samantha promises to keep in touch after she heads out of town.

The story deepens when Jeff and Stanford discover an elderly homeless man secretly living in the bowling alley. They rush him to the hospital, where he falls into a coma. It’s revealed that the man is Ernie “the Gernie,” a founding member of the original Winkys World bowling team and a longtime friend of the alley’s first owner, a fixture of the community long before Jeff’s time. Robert Breuler brings a weighty history to this moment, grounding the film in memory and loyalty to the place.

Ernie’s condition becomes a catalyst that softens tensions and nudges Jeff toward reconciliation with his sister and mother. The team rallies for a heartfelt closing ceremony hosted by Sheila, Jeff, Stanford, and the other staff, celebrating Winkys World even as the sale remains on the horizon. The goodbye is bittersweet but respectful; the employees vow to stay connected, and Jeff begins to accept a future beyond the alley’s walls while still honoring the community that defined him.

When Ernie exits the hospital, the ceremony marks a meaningful farewell, and Jeff finds a measure of peace with the knowledge that people who matter will remain in his life, regardless of Winkys’ sale. A late-night text from Samantha hints at a new chapter for both of them, and Jeff’s first step is a quiet, hopeful message back to his mother, signaling a restored line of communication and a renewed readiness to face whatever comes next.
