A Christmas Without Snow

Zoe Jensen, Michael Learned, a divorcee, moves from Omaha to San Francisco to rebuild her life. She leaves her young son with his grandmother until she feels financially secure enough to bring him with her. She joins a local church choir that has just welcomed a new, demanding choirmaster, John Houseman Ephraim Adams, whose exacting standards push the group to aim high as they work toward a Christmas performance of Handel’s Messiah. The choir members grapple with personal issues while they strive to grow together and prove they can meet Adams’s lofty expectations.

A teacher by trade, Zoe soon learns that there are no teaching positions available and that she lacks the training for other kinds of work. Living in a modest apartment, she hones her typing skills to land an office job, while her mother helps look after her son, who grows increasingly anxious from their separation. At the church, a cross-section of inner-city residents gathers—a former opera singer and a student hoping to educate himself for a future profession. The opera singer’s ego undermines her, the student is falsely accused of vandalizing the church organ because of his race, and he is vindicated by friends who believe in him. Despite these obstacles, they persevere in the choir, and Zoe eventually finds steady employment in an office. With help from a bargain hunter, she creates a warm home for her son and herself.

Unexpected talent flourishes within the group, and the amateurs give their best for the love of music. Their dedication extends beyond the choir loft as they come together to repair the organ pipes, showing a communal spirit that binds them all. At a pre-Christmas holiday dinner, Adams reveals a gentler side by presenting gifts to the choir and joining in the celebration, only to suddenly collapse. He is diagnosed with a stroke at a local hospital, and the news casts a quiet shadow over the preparations.

The Christmas concert proceeds with grace, as the choir performs Messiah—accompanied by the vintage organ—while Adams watches from a wheelchair. Through trials and triumphs, the choir has transformed from a disparate group of city dwellers into a true, supportive family, united by their shared love of music and their newfound sense of belonging.
