What Happens in When Angels Sleep: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of When Angels Sleep (2017) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Germán, a businessman who is trying to juggle work and family life, drifts off behind the wheel and unexpectedly hits Gloria, a teenage girl, with his car after falling asleep. The moment he realizes what’s happened, he searches for help, hoping to reach emergency services, but the operator cannot locate him and Germán hesitates to tell the truth about the accident. Desperate to do right by Gloria and her friend Silvia, he places Gloria in the car and drives on in search of assistance, yet Gloria’s injuries prove fatal before they reach help. Silvia, who witnessed the aftermath, notices the damaged headlight and concludes that the car that struck Gloria is the same one she saw earlier; she recalls that the vehicle swerved toward them and never slowed or stopped, and she flees in fear, convinced that Germán must have hit them on purpose.

Germán, haunted by the fear of losing his family and facing jail, makes a drastic choice to erase the evidence. He drowns Silvia in a river and then hides both bodies in the water, weight sinking them to the bottom with stones. He returns home, cleans up, takes a shower, and lies down in bed, while his wife speaks to the police, offering the explanation that her husband had run over a dog, became extremely nervous, and had called emergency services in a panic in the heat of the moment.

A year later, Germán remains largely withdrawn from work as he focuses on preparing his daughter Estela’s upcoming birthday party. When his wife calls him for lunch, a TV report recounts the case of the two murdered teenage girls, and the investigation advances as the two boys who had been with Gloria that night are arrested as the main suspects. The story closes with the family’s quiet moment at home as the wife switches off the television, hinting at the unresolved tension and the fragile line between truth and fear that continues to define their lives.

When Angels Sleep Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about When Angels Sleep (2017): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Germán kill Silvia after the accident?

Germán kills Silvia because she witnessed the aftermath of the crash and incorrectly concluded that the accident was intentional. After seeing the damaged headlight and noticing Germán's car swerved toward them without slowing, Silvia flees in fear, convinced he meant to hit them. Fearing that Silvia will identify him to police and destroy his life and family, Germán drowns her in a river to silence her, then weights both bodies with stones to hide the evidence.

Q2

Why does Silvia think the crash was intentional?

Silvia believes Germán struck Gloria deliberately because she observed key details that night. She noticed the car swerved toward them rather than drifting randomly, and critically, the vehicle never slowed down or stopped after the impact. When she sees the damaged headlight on Germán's car, she connects it to the vehicle that hit her friend and concludes it was an intentional attack.

Q3

Why doesn't Germán call the police immediately after hitting Gloria?

Germán hesitates to call the police because he fears the consequences. When he finally contacts emergency services, he struggles to explain what happened and remains reluctant to tell the truth. The operator cannot locate his position, which adds to his panic. His hesitation stems from knowing he fell asleep at the wheel and recognizing that admitting to hitting a teenage girl will destroy his family life and likely send him to prison.

Q4

What happens to Gloria after Germán puts her in the car?

Gloria dies from her injuries before they can reach help. Despite Germán's desperate attempt to get her to a hospital, her injuries are fatal. He drives with both Gloria and Silvia in the car seeking assistance, but Gloria succumbs to her wounds during the journey. This death pushes Germán further into panic and sets the stage for his subsequent cover-up.

Q5

Why does Germán's wife tell the police he hit a dog instead of a person?

Germán's wife covers for him by fabricating a story because she wants to protect her family. When she speaks to the police, she claims her husband ran over a dog, became extremely nervous, and panicked enough to call emergency services in a panic. She provides this false explanation to shield Germán from criminal consequences, though she clearly suspects something is wrong.

Q6

Who are the suspects arrested in connection to the girls' murders?

Two boys who had been out partying with Gloria and Silvia that night are arrested as the main suspects. These two individuals were with the girls earlier and are now implicated in the murders, though the audience knows Germán is actually responsible. The police investigation incorrectly focuses on these suspects while the real killer remains free.

Q7

Why is Germán focused on his daughter's birthday party a year after the accident?

Germán throws himself into preparing his daughter Estela's birthday party as a way to maintain normalcy and cope with his guilt. He has largely withdrawn from work and channels his energy into creating a perfect family moment. The party represents the life he was desperate to protect by committing murder, yet his mental state remains haunted as the news of the case resurfaces during the celebrations.

Q8

What does the ending reveal about Germán's fate?

The ending shows that while Germán remains free, he is psychologically tormented by his crime. The TV news reveals that innocent suspects have been arrested for murders he committed, meaning justice has not been served. His wife switches off the television, suggesting she may finally suspect the truth but chooses denial. Germán lives in constant fear of exposure while knowing the wrong people are being punished for his deeds.

Q9

What does Germán do after drowning Silvia?

After drowning Silvia and weighting both bodies to sink them in the river, Germán returns home and attempts to resume normal life. He showers to clean himself and lies down in bed as if nothing happened. His wife begins piecing together the events while Germán grapples with fear of exposure, yet the household continues superficially as normal.

Q10

Why does Germán weight the bodies with stones?

Germán weights both Gloria and Silvia's bodies with stones to ensure they sink to the bottom of the river and remain hidden. This deliberate act shows his calculated attempt to destroy all evidence of his crimes. By making sure the bodies would not surface, he hoped to prevent discovery and protect himself from ever being connected to the murders.
