After his mother is abducted and murdered during a 1945 bus ride, a young boy reaches a tiny Georgia town alone. Mistaken for deaf and mute, he deliberately maintains his silence, discovering that quiet grants him a hidden influence. He listens to the townspeople’s secrets, using their assumptions to protect himself and uncover the truth.
