Set among a traveling troupe of dancers and performers, the company hops from town to town, scraping by as crowds grow thin. The aging manager falls for a newcomer, Liliana, Carla Del Poggio. The troupe’s faithful mistress Melina Amour watches with a mix of jealousy and patience; Melina is portrayed by Giulietta Masina.
That evening, the vaudeville show in a small Italian town is a sold-out affair, and Liliana is there in the appreciative crowd. Two performers are forced to ride in the train toilet to evade the fare, while Liliana boards the same train. The next morning, money is tight and the group cannot hire a carriage; Liliana uses the last of her funds to hire one, saving the troupe several miles and convincing them to welcome her into the fold.
At the performance, a sparse and hostile crowd mocks each act in turn. The local promoter notices that Liliana draws approving reactions and interrupts the show to feature the newcomer. Over the next two days, the crowds grow larger as the troupe leans into Liliana’s rising appeal.
That night, a wealthy man invites the group to his mansion for dinner. Checco Dal Monte, the head of the troupe, realizes he desires Liliana. The next morning, as the group heads toward the train station, Checco abandons his longtime mistress Melina to walk with Liliana.
On arrival in Rome, Checco leaves the old troupe to form his own company featuring Liliana. Desperate for money, he visits Melina and begs for funds to launch the new show. Stricken, she hands him money and tells him to never contact her again.
Liliana makes her debut in a minor role as a featured dancer beside the prima donna, signaling a shift in the troupe’s fortunes. The young starlet’s ascent culminates with a fur-coated debut on a first-class train carriage bound for Milan, while Checco and the remaining troupe head to Foggia on the adjacent track.
In the final scene, the two trains pull away from the station as Checco, reunited with Melina, begins to flirt with a young woman across the aisle, suggesting the cycle is ready to start again.
