Up in Mabel’s Room

Gary is about to celebrate one month of marriage when his ex-girlfriend Mabel contacts him. She demands the return of a gift—a slip embroidered with a loving Mexico City message—and threatens to tell his wife unless he confesses. They ride from his office to his apartment, where Mabel hands over the slip and lays down the ultimatum.

That weekend, a social gathering at Arthur's sister Martha's house brings together Gary, Geraldine, Alicia and Jimmy. To retrieve the slip without exposing himself, Gary hires Boris the waiter to slip into Mabel's room and steal it back. The plan hinges on reclaiming the slip while keeping Geraldine in the dark.

Boris successfully enters Mabel's room and retrieves the slip, delivering it to Gary. Gary hides the slip in his dinner-jacket pocket, feeling temporarily in control. Later, while dancing with Geraldine, the slip slips out and he quickly stuffs it into a vase to avoid discovery.

When Gary plucks the slip from the vase, he realizes it's not the slip he wants. Geraldine steps away to phone her mother for advice about Gary's strange behavior, while Alicia deliberately flirts with him to pry secrets from him. After the ruse, he ends up confessing the secret to Alicia, who promptly tells Martha.

Mabel discovers her room has been burgled and tells Martha about the slip. The attempted theft heightens the stakes and pulls more characters into the web of suspicion. The idea of a past romance becomes the center of the household's tension.

Gary and Boris make another attempt to steal the slip by entering Mabel's room through the window, but Mabel interrupts them and they are forced to hide under the bed. The cat-and-mouse game intensifies as they scramble to avoid discovery.

Geraldine reports an intruder on the roof, prompting Martha to arm herself with a shotgun. Noticing Alicia's intense interest in Gary, Jimmy grows suspicious that an affair is underway. The house buzzes with paranoia as the slip remains at large.

Boris flees to the roof, but Martha fires at him and he climbs back through a window. Geraldine faints on the floor and then spots her husband under Mabel's bed, revealing how close the danger is to home. The tension peaks as the truth about the slip edges closer to exposure.

The following day, Gary sits alone in the library while Martha carries her maid's sister's baby. She explains she disposed of the slip by giving it to her maid Priscilla as a wedding gift. The baby moment becomes a pivotal cover story around the mistaken paternity and the whereabouts of the slip.

Alicia and Arthur see Gary with the baby and jump to the conclusion that he and Mabel have a secret child outside of Geraldine. The mistaken paternity adds to the comic farce and fuels suspicions among the group.

Gary and Boris crash Priscilla's wedding in a bid to retrieve the slip from her wrist. Boris attempts to remove the slip, but the groom knocks him out, interrupting the ceremony and exposing the chaos caused by the missing slip.

Gary returns with the actual slip and explains that it had been the missing token of his past, not a real threat. Geraldine believes his version of events, and the tension gradually dissolves. The family members slowly acknowledge the truth and the chaotic mistaken affairs fade away.

Shortly after, Geraldine's mother phones again, but Geraldine no longer needs her counsel. The couple's trust is restored and the embroidered slip no longer dictates their lives. The home settles back into normalcy as the truth comes out.
