François is a literary scholar and enjoys a comfortable, albeit solitary, life. His world is upended when the charismatic Mohamed Ben Abbes becomes president of France, initiating significant societal changes including the reintroduction of patriarchy and polygamy. Following his job loss, François is offered a chance to return to teaching at the Sorbonne, but only if he converts to Islam. Faced with growing loneliness and a profound personal dilemma, he must consider the condition of his potential return to a familiar life.
