Set against the turbulent 1930s, the film follows a destitute Chinese hawker who peddles silk on the bustling streets of Calcutta while China battles Japan’s militarist aggression. Amid the turmoil, poet Rabindranath Tagore writes a scathing letter to Japanese poet Noguchi, wishing remorse instead of triumph. The work later earned the dubious honor of being the first movie banned in independent India.
