In early 1970s England, three friends spend their days in banter, drinking, fighting, and chasing girls. Freddie Christian Cooke longs to escape their working-class world, while cheeky Bruce Tom Hughes and easygoing Snork Jack Doolan are happy with life the way it is. When Freddie lands a job as a door-to-door insurance salesman and bumps into his old school sweetheart Julie Felicity Jones, the gang is forced to make choices that will change their lives forever.
Freddie’s new path places him under the wing of Mr. Kendrick Ralph Fiennes, the Julie’s father, and Freddie learns the craft from the firm’s top seller, Mike Ramsay Matthew Goode, who is also Julie’s fiancé, how to persuade people to buy life insurance. Freddie hopes the job will lift him out of his factory-worker father’s shadow and stretch the boundaries of their world.
Bruce embraces life with gusto, dreaming of someday leaving Cemetery Junction, but he bears a quiet anger toward his father for not fighting for his mother when she left. Snork, meanwhile, lives for the simple pursuit of a girlfriend, working at the railway station and trying to connect with someone who truly notices him. Freddie rekindles his friendship with Julie, who confesses aspirations to travel and become a photographer, even as her parents and Mike expect her to settle into a traditional housewife role like her mother.
When Freddie is invited to the firm’s winners’ ball, he brings Bruce and Snork as guests. Snork tries to liven the night with a performance, but a poorly judged joke turns embarrassing, forcing Freddie to confront the fragile lines of pride among old friends. The next day, Freddie visits his clients and learns that his very first client’s husband has died, prompting him to question whether his new livelihood truly aligns with his wishes.
He asks Bruce when they plan to leave Cemetery Junction, and they later invite Julie to a nightclub. In the club, Bruce’s bravado leads to trouble after an inappropriate confrontation, landing him in police cells overnight. Freddie accompanies Julie home and the two examine the photographs she has taken, talking about how their lives might unfold, while Freddie declares his love and imagines traveling with her.
Bruce is visited in his cell by Officer Wayne Davies, who once knew his father, and who challenges Bruce to grow up and stop taking out his anger on others. The following morning, Snork begins a budding romance with Louise, Bryony Hannah. Bruce quietly begins to repair his relationship with his own father, and Freddie returns to the railway station to begin his journey with Snork still by his side.
But Snork’s choice shifts the plan: he announces from the station PA that Bruce will not accompany Freddie on the trip. Freddie stands at the threshold of departure, but when Julie races toward him at the platform, he chooses not to go alone. They board the train together, stepping into a future that remains theirs to write.
