Set in remote Russia along the wild Ugrum‑Reka, the “Moody River”, the film follows Prohor Gromov, son of a dishonest trader who seeks independence. He accepts his father’s order to transport furs to the nearest town, takes a shortcut and becomes lost. His father’s servant, Abdulla, assigned to guard him, nearly shoots Prohor out of hunger but regains composure and saves him, urging them onward.
