Udaan

Rohan, along with his friends Vikram, Benoy, and Maninder, gets expelled from Bishop Cotton School in Shimla after being caught watching an adult movie off campus. This event marks a turning point in his adolescence, forcing him to return home and face a new reality.

Rohan arrives in Jamshedpur, where he encounters his stern and abusive father and unexpectedly meets his half-brother Arjun, who was unaware of his existence. His father subjects him to physical and verbal abuse, emphasizing his disappointment in Rohan’s choices.

Seeking escape, Rohan sneaks out one night, takes his father's car, and visits a local bar. There, he meets college seniors who attempt to rag him but eventually become his friends, establishing a pattern of defying authority.

In order to frustrate his father and pursue his dream of becoming a writer, Rohan intentionally fails his upcoming exams. His act of rebellion is motivated by his desire for independence from his father's strict expectations.

Rohan learns that Arjun has been hospitalized after falling down the stairs, which was a result of a fight with their father over a lost contract. Rohan lies to his father about passing his exams to avoid additional conflict.

While in the hospital, Rohan impresses the medical staff with his storytelling and poetry. He also discovers that Arjun was beaten by their father after a business failure, revealing the rough circumstances of their family life.

Rohan faces a confrontation with his father after returning from Calcutta. He is assaulted, but the next day, his father apologizes, suggesting a temporary reconciliation that hints at potential change.

Rohan's father reveals his plans to remarry and send Arjun to boarding school, while Rohan is expected to work full-time at the factory. He also burns Rohan’s poems, symbolizing the suppression of Rohan's aspirations.

On his 18th birthday, Rohan receives a family heirloom watch from his father who advises him to continue the tradition. He learns that his friends have settled into their lives, but he feels the urge to forge his own path.

Frustrated, Rohan vandalizes his father's car by the river, risking arrest when policemen witness him. He spends a night in prison, symbolizing his struggle against his oppressive home life.

As Rohan prepares to leave for boarding school, he exchanges heartfelt words with Arjun and packs his belongings. His stepmother and her relatives arrive, indicating a new chapter for the family.

Rohan confronts his father at his home, criticizing his behavior and revealing his intention to leave. When his father tries to stop him, Rohan outruns him, symbolizing his desire for freedom.

Realizing he cannot abandon Arjun to their father's toxic environment, Rohan convinces his brother to run away with him to Mumbai. They leave behind their past marked by violence and oppression.

The movie concludes with Rohan and Arjun walking hand in hand towards an uncertain, hopeful future, symbolizing their escape from their troubled past and their pursuit of new possibilities.
