Truffaldino from Bergamo

Federico Rasponi is killed and Florindo Aretusi becomes a prime suspect as the lovers of the Rasponi family. Beatrice Rasponi decides to pursue Florindo to Venice in disguise as Federico, hoping to confront him and uncover the truth. Florindo flees Turin toward Venice to escape the investigation.

On the road to Venice, Beatrice travels in disguise to stay close to Florindo. Her plan is helped by the encounter with bandits, and after his slapstick antics defeat the troupe she hires Truffaldino from Bergamo as her servant. This marks the start of Truffaldino's double-dealing life serving two masters.

In Venice, Florindo and Beatrice book two neighboring rooms in the same inn. Neither realizes the other’s true identity, which sows confusion and sets the stage for comic misunderstandings and secret plans. The proximity of their rooms becomes a focal point for their secret lives.

Beatrice visits Pantalone to retrieve Federico's funds. It is revealed that with Federico's presumed death, Clarice has been betrothed to her true love, Silvio Lombardy, complicating loyalties and spurring new tensions. Beatrice’s sudden appearance disrupts these arrangements.

Beatrice discloses her true identity to Clarice and extracts a vow of silence. Clarice remains doubtful, and when Beatrice begins removing her shirt to prove her sex, Pantalone intrudes, misreading the moment and declaring the couple’s wedding would be the next day. The misunderstanding deepens the knot of relationships.

Silvio confronts Pantalone over the betrothal as Dr. Lombardy is slighted in negotiations. The duel is interrupted by Clarice, and Silvio renounces Beatrice's love, fueling a new wave of jealousy and revenge. Beatrice’s position becomes even more precarious in the escalating feud.

Truffaldino spends time plotting meals for both masters and flirts with Smeradlina. He launders both Florindo’s and Beatrice’s wardrobes at once, causing the two to discover each other’s belongings and forcing him to invent an alibi about inheriting them from a deceased master. The farce deepens as he plays both sides.

The tangled tricks leave Florindo and Beatrice under the impression that the other has died, prolonging their emotional estrangements. This mistaken belief allows the characters to reconsider strategies and sets up the eventual reunification. The stakes of the deception grow ever higher.

Beatrice finally reveals her true identity to the others, and Pantalone eagerly renews the plan for Clarice to wed Silvio. The mistaken past is put aside, and the couples' fates drift toward official engagements once more. Tensions ease as a path toward reconciliation emerges.

Truffaldino's deception is finally exposed, and Turinese guards are defeated in a slapstick sequence. The captain reveals he was there to deliver a document clearing Florindo’s name for Federico's murder, restoring Florindo’s good standing and bringing the comedy to a jubilant close.
