What Happens in Treacle Jr.: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Treacle Jr. (2010) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

The film opens with Tom eating with his family. He drives to Birmingham, boards the London train, and spends the day wandering through the city before finally sleeping outside a shop. In the morning, he discards his phone in a lake and bins his bank cards, keeping only a family photo as a fragile tether to the past while he pockets the remaining money.

That night, after a drink in the park, he is attacked by a gang of youths; when he tries to flee, he crashes into a tree and injures himself. The next morning, while waiting in A&E, Aidan behaves disruptively and then begins talking to Tom before Tom is called for examination. When Tom leaves, Aidan follows him.

Walking together, Aidan goes to urinate, and Tom, sensing an opportunity to escape, flees. He spots a couple having sex but immediately runs into Aidan again. Still determined to shake him off, Tom faints outside Aidan’s flat, and Aidan invites him inside and offers a beer. Linda—Aidan’s so‑called girlfriend—arrives home, startling Tom, whom he has just seen with her, and she is displeased that Aidan has earned little money. She punches him and tells him to throw Tom out. Tom leaves to buy tea, but returns when he discovers his pocket is empty, only to be met with Linda’s denial of knowledge and a smug smile as he departs.

After begging for change, Tom buys tea in a café. Aidan arrives with a cat carrier and offers to help with mouse-catching. The shop manager leads him to the back and attacks him. Tom hears the commotion, checks his health, and watches as Aidan realizes the elderly neighbour’s cat is missing. They locate the cat’s corpse and, in a strange gesture of care, buy a kitten for the owner, who yells at them to leave.

Aidan then shows Tom a drum kit he is saving for, dreaming of fame. Tom tells him to leave him alone, admitting he cannot cope with people—including his own family. Depressed, Tom pulls out the family photo and finds a bank card, which he uses to withdraw cash. He returns to Aidan’s flat, apologizes, and asks to stay, offering £200. Aidan tells Linda that Tom has paid £100, keeping the rest to fund his drum kit, and they celebrate. Yet, drunk, Aidan confesses to Linda that he actually received £200 and is saving toward a drum kit. Linda realizes Tom is “Mr. Moneybags” and, in a disturbing moment, masturbates him.

The next day, Aidan takes Tom to the Horniman Museum where they enjoy making music with public instruments. Aidan later withdraws his savings but is seen by a man who may be following him; as he walks home, the man mugs him. Tom asks for a description and realizes the mugger was Linda’s sexual partner. Linda returns home with designer clothes, and, allergic to cats, finds the kitten hidden in the wardrobe and attacks Aidan. When Tom protests, Linda threatens him with retaliation by her gangster friends. Tom then menaces her with a knife, grabbing her by the throat and demanding she confess to stealing the money. Frightened, she has an asthma attack; Aidan grabs for her inhaler, but it falls under the fridge. With Linda unconscious, they eventually recover it. Aidan kicks her out permanently, enduring her abuse in silence.

Aidan goes to the shop to see the drum kit, only to find it has been sold, which greatly upsets him. He returns home to discover Tom has gone, heightening his distress. Entering his bedroom, he finds the kit Tom has bought for him. The film ends with Aidan drumming and Tom walking to a train station, boarding and taking the train home.

Treacle Jr. Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Treacle Jr. (2010): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Tom leave his wife and baby to live on the streets?

Tom abandons his family because he feels he cannot cope with people, including his own family. Throughout the film, he admits to Aidan that he 'cannot cope with people,' suggesting a psychological breakdown or inability to handle the responsibilities and emotions of family life. His decision to discard his phone and bank cards represents a deliberate severance from his previous identity and life.

Foreshadowing: The opening scene shows Tom eating peacefully with his family, but his subsequent actions reveal an internal conflict that was hidden beneath that seemingly normal family moment.

Q2

Why does Tom throw away his phone and bank cards?

Tom discards his phone in a lake and bins his bank cards as a way to completely cut ties with his former life. He keeps only a family photo and some cash, suggesting he wants to disappear and start fresh without any connections to his past or any way for his family to reach him.

Foreshadowing: This act of severing ties foreshadows Tom's journey of self-imposed exile and his eventual, ambiguous return home at the film's end.

Q3

Why does Aidan become so insistent on sticking with Tom?

Aidan's attachment seems rooted in his blindly optimistic nature and his need for connection. Despite Tom's repeated attempts to shake him off, fleeing, feigning fainting, telling him to leave, Aidan persists. He sees something in Tom, perhaps recognizing a fellow lost soul, and refuses to let him disappear. Their friendship develops through Tom's weakening resolve and his gradual acceptance of human connection.

Foreshadowing: Aidan's disruptive behavior in A&E establishes his character as someone who forces himself into others' lives without reading social cues.

Q4

Why does Linda steal Tom's money?

Linda steals Tom's money because she sees him as an easy target, a vulnerable man with cash who has no real connection to anyone in their world. When she realizes Tom paid £200 to stay but Aidan only told her £100, she discovers Tom is 'Mr. Moneybags' and takes advantage of the situation. Her theft is consistent with her materialistic nature, shown by her returning home with designer clothes.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, Linda expresses displeasure that Aidan earned little money, establishing her priority on financial gain over compassion.

Q5

What is the purpose of the scene where Linda performs a sexual act on Tom?

The scene depicts Linda sexually exploiting Tom while he is drunk and vulnerable, a disturbing moment that underscores her manipulative and predatory nature. After learning Tom actually paid £200 (not the £100 Aidan told her), she sees him as a meal ticket and uses sexual coercion to further her control over him. This scene is played for uncomfortable realism rather than comedy, highlighting the power dynamics and exploitation in Aidan's household.

Foreshadowing: This moment follows immediately after Aidan confesses to Linda that Tom paid the full £200, revealing her shift from contempt to calculated interest in Tom's money.

Q6

Why does Tom buy the drum kit for Aidan?

Tom buys the drum kit as a gesture of redemption and gratitude. After using his remaining bank card to withdraw cash and apologising for his earlier behavior, Tom wants to do something meaningful for Aidan, who had shown him kindness despite his resistance. The drum kit represents Aidan's dream, and by fulfilling it, Tom achieves a sense of purpose and connection he thought he had lost. This act marks the turning point in their friendship and Tom's emotional journey.

Foreshadowing: Aidan previously showed Tom the drum kit he was saving for, expressing his dream of fame, which Planted the idea in Tom's mind for this meaningful gift.

Q7

Why does Tom threaten Linda with a knife?

Tom confronts Linda with a knife because she has stolen his money, threatened him with retaliation from her gangster friends, and attacked Aidan over the kitten. Driven to a breaking point by her manipulation and violence, Tom grabs her by the throat and demands she confess to stealing. This moment shows Tom, who has been passive and withdrawn throughout the film, finally asserting himself and protecting the people he has come to care about.

Foreshadowing: Tom's earlier withdrawal and silence throughout Linda's abusive behavior builds toward this explosive confrontation.

Q8

What happens to Linda after the confrontation?

After Tom threatens her, Linda has an asthma attack. The inhaler falls under the fridge, and after a tense struggle, they recover it and she regains consciousness. Aidan then kicks Linda out permanently, enduring her abuse in silence. She is removed from their lives, ending her parasitic relationship with both men.

Foreshadowing: Linda's allergy to cats and her violent reaction to the kitten earlier foreshadowed her vulnerability and that Aidan would eventually choose Tom over her.

Q9

Why does Tom return home at the end of the film?

Tom returns home because his journey of self-imposed exile has reached its conclusion. Through his connection with Aidan and the act of buying the drum kit, he has found a sense of purpose and redemption he thought he had lost. The final shot of him boarding the train suggests he is going back to his wife and baby, though the film leaves this ambiguous. His arc completes as he transitions from a man who 'cannot cope with people' to someone capable of meaningful human connection and sacrifice.

Foreshadowing: Tom keeping the family photo throughout the film, and his earlier admission about not being able to cope, set up his eventual decision to return and face his responsibilities.

Q10

Why is the mugging scene important to the plot?

The mugging is significant because Tom realizes the mugger was Linda's sexual partner, revealing she has another man in her life aside from Aidan. This discovery adds to Tom's distrust of Linda and foreshadows her eventual betrayal, her theft of his money and her threat to involve 'gangster friends' against him. The mugging also results in Aidan losing his savings, which makes the drum kit gift later even more meaningful.

Foreshadowing: Linda returning home with designer clothes before the mugging already hinted at money coming from an unspecified source.

Q11

Why does Linda attack Aidan over the kitten?

Linda attacks Aidan because she is allergic to cats and discovers the kitten Tom and Aidan bought is hidden in the wardrobe. Her allergic reaction triggers a violent outburst, but the underlying cause is her resentment of the care and attention Aidan shows toward the kitten, something she cannot stand. This incident further illustrates her toxic and volatile nature, and it becomes another turning point leading to the final confrontation.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, Tom and Aidan bought the kitten as a caring gesture for the elderly neighbor, showing their developing compassion, a stark contrast to Linda's self-centered reaction.

Q12

Why does the shop sell Aidan's drum kit?

The shop sells Aidan's drum kit because he had been saving toward it but had not yet purchased it outright. When he goes to see it after the mugging, he discovers it has been sold to someone else. This loss devastates him, amplifying his distress when he returns home to find Tom gone. However, Tom had already secretly bought it for him, making the eventual discovery in his bedroom a joyful resolution.

Foreshadowing: Aidan showing Tom the drum kit and telling him the price establishes both his dream and the vulnerability of his savings.
