Mary and Verne Kimber discuss their uncertain future in Tombstone, while danger lingers as the crickets stop chirping. The army officer hastily douses a campfire to curb attention, signaling caution. Soon after, Indians attack the wagon train, forcing the travelers to flee to a gulley.

The Indians overwhelm the wagon train, killing everyone in reach. The brutal assault leaves a trail of devastation and sets the tone for the frontier's perilous violence.

The next day Landry and his prisoner Girard arrive at the wreck to bury the dead and locate Mrs. Kimber and the children. As they try to depart, Indians attack again; Landry frees Girard and gives him a gun to fight. Girard betrays the trust by turning his gun on Landry, but Landry overpowers him.

The group arrives in Tombstone and Girard is jailed on charges connected to the violence. He has a brief visit with his girlfriend Della, asking her to contact his brothers.

Matt receives word that Girard will be sent to Prescott, and a hearse carries Frank toward Prescott with Matt riding along. Frank’s brothers stop the hearse, killing the undertaker and wounding Matt, allowing Frank to escape.
