Marshal Matt Landry is after Frank Girard for selling guns to the Indians, and he closes in on his quarry when a small wagon trail bound for Tombstone meets the scrutiny of the US Army. The army, wary of a possible Indian attack, leaves behind two guards and a Gatling gun while they press on to scout the war party. The atmosphere tightens as a tense exchange of warnings and precautions unfolds, and the group along the trail includes Mary Kimber and her husband, Verne Kimber, who argue about their future in Tombstone. The commander senses danger—the crickets suddenly go silent—and orders the group to extinguish a campfire and take shelter in a gulley, signaling that trouble is imminent.

When the Indians strike, the wagon train is overwhelmed and all is lost. The next day, Matt Landry and Girard reach the wrecked scene to bury the dead. Landry discovers Mrs. Kimber and her children still alive, but danger is far from over. The Indians attack again as they begin to depart, and in a moment of reckoning, Landry frees Girard and hands him a gun to defend himself. The uneasy mercy turns sour when Girard unexpectedly shoots and tries to seize the buckboard, prompting a furious struggle in which Landry neutralizes him.

The story shifts to Tombstone, where Girard is imprisoned. He steals a moment with his girlfriend, Della, urging her to contact his brothers. Back at home, Landry greets his own family with warmth—he sings both of his children to sleep and receives a quiet reward for his work. Verne Kimber arrives in town, seeking a stage to San Francisco that he believes he can earn by doing hard work and cleaning. Meanwhile, Della comes to meet Girard’s brothers, and Kimber sees a newspaper photo of his wife, recognizing it as a survivor of the Apache raid. A brotherly warning follows: stay out of this until the time is right.

Over dinner at home, Landry discusses the situation with Mrs. Kimber, while [Jim Hadlock] visits and advises that Girard be sent away sooner rather than later. Landry drafts a telegram asking for Girard to be transferred to Prescott. The town buzzes with plans: Matt suggests Mary move into a boarding house to take a job at the local newspaper, and the Kimber children beg their father for a bedtime song, which he happily provides.

In a covert bid to control the outcome, Girard’s brothers help Verne Kimber set up a telegraph machine to intercept every message about the transfer. When a telegram confirms that Frank is to be moved to Prescott on a Sunday, the trio stages a bold escape: they place Frank in a hearse and start their getaway, but the undertaker is killed and Matt is wounded as they try to flee. Mary stays by his side to help him recover.

Frank reconnects with Verne and demands his money, while another telegram reveals a silver shipment of 72,000 ounces. Frank decides to steal the silver and agrees to give Verne a quarter of the haul. The three brothers strike the stagecoach and seize the treasure, forcing Matt to retreat momentarily to cover his wounds and gather his thoughts. As the pursuit closes in, Matt confirms the truth about the intercepted wires and the telegraph ruse, and the stage is set for a final confrontation.

With the truth exposed, Verne Kimber confronts the others, and the posse finally closes in. A gunfight erupts as Kimber, Frank, and Steve Girard face off against Matt and Jim Hadlock. In the end, all three of the Girard brothers are killed, and Kimber seizes the opportunity to shoot Jim as he closes in on the silver. Matt overpowers Verne, who faces trial for murder. As Verne pleads for Mary to come with him, she chooses duty and integrity over escape, returning to the Kimber household. The closing moment hints at a fragile peace, with a final, resigned quip from the girl: You men!
