Shaina Ela Thier is a historian from 600 years in the future who travels back in time with a research group. A travel misstep strands her in 2015 New York City, far from where she aimed to be and utterly alone. Her only lifeline to help comes in the form of her so‑called “implement”—a small, smartphone‑like device from the distant future that is supposed to bridge her to aid, though it functions imperfectly and often leaves her searching for connection.

In a world she misreads as uniformly kind and cooperative, Shaina tries to reach out to strangers to request assistance. She believes that human generosity is the norm everywhere, a belief deeply rooted in the values she carries as a historian.
