Inspired by a ballad by Taras Shevchenko, the film explores a recurring Ukrainian folk tale about a woman named Catherine who rescues her lover by disguising him as her brother. This parable echoes throughout Ukrainian history, reflecting dramatic and heroic events. Catherine repeatedly loses her home, facing challenges like the Chernobyl disaster, but embodies the resilience of the Ukrainian people as she rebuilds, generation after generation. The story illustrates Catherine’s journey of redemption and symbolizes Ukraine’s enduring spirit and survival.
