In Sicily at the start of the twentieth century, two noble families celebrate the wedding of Raimondo and Eugenia. After the couple retreat to the bedroom, a telegram is slipped under the door declaring that they are brother and sister. For inheritance and decorum, they reluctantly agree to stay married but sleep apart. Eugenia resents the idea of enforced chastity, and on their honeymoon in Paris she yields to the advances of a French baron, Barone Henri de Sarcey. Yet when she confesses that she is still a virgin, he disappears quickly. Back in Sicily she is driven to mass by the chauffeur, Silvanno Pennacchini, who stops at an isolated hut and possesses her. These trysts continue until the chauffeur is discovered to have been helping himself not only to the mistress but also to the household silver. At his trial, she reluctantly identifies him.

When Raimondo goes off to war in Africa, Eugenia grows closer to Evelyn, a free-spirited journalist. After Raimondo returns as a hero, the two women ride bicycles through the countryside and pass the hut where Eugenia lost her virginity. Evelyn thinks it would be a provoking idea for the two of them to make love on the same spot, but upon peering through the door they glimpse Raimondo atop a peasant girl. He is then elected to the Parliament in Rome and takes an apartment there. When Eugenia visits him, he suggests that rather than the dull routine of chastity they should taste the ultimate forbidden pleasure of incest. The moment arrives when the telephone rings: an urgent message from Sicily says that they are not brother and sister after all. Yet the prospect of ordinary conjugal sex does not excite either of them.

Italy enters the First World War and Raimondo dies at the front. Eugenia volunteers as a nurse and tends badly wounded soldiers, one of whom is the ex-chauffeur. After the war she decides to go to Paris, where she discovers that the baron—the only man she had offered herself to—is dead. One evening, while she is in her underclothes, there is a knock and the ex-chauffeur returns, now recovered from his wounds. He does not seek revenge for his imprisonment; he simply wants to resume where they left off.

Q1

Why did Eugenia and Raimondo agree to stay married after learning they were siblings?

A.

They chose to stay married primarily to protect their family inheritance and maintain social decorum. Since they came from noble families, a divorce would have caused a scandal that could have jeopardized their status and wealth. Instead, they agreed to live as siblings, sharing the same roof but sleeping in separate rooms, while presenting a united front to society.

Q2

Why did the French baron disappear after learning Eugenia was still a virgin?

A.

The baron was a libertine who pursued women for sexual conquest, not romantic or physical intimacy with an inexperienced partner. When Eugenia confesses she is still a virgin, he loses interest because his desire was specifically for experienced women, not someone who would require a slower, more intimate approach. His sudden departure reflects his superficial priorities.

Q3

Why did Raimondo suggest incest instead of simply getting a divorce?

A.

After years of enforced chastity living as siblings, Raimondo proposed incest as the ultimate forbidden pleasure, a way to rebel against the restrictive moral codes that had governed their marriage. By then, both had already been unfaithful (Eugenia with the chauffeur and baron, Raimondo with the peasant girl), so conventional marital sex seemed dull. The suggestion reflects the film's satirical treatment of society's double standards around sexuality.

Q4

Why weren't Eugenia and Raimondo excited when they learned they weren't actually siblings?

A.

By the time the telegram arrived confirming they were not siblings, both characters had already resigned themselves to their unusual arrangement and had explored other relationships. The prospect of ordinary conjugal sex no longer excited them because they had become desensitized to societal taboos. Their relationship had evolved beyond traditional marriage into something more complex and transgressive.

Q5

Why does the ex-chauffeur return at the end after being wounded in the war?

A.

The ex-chauffeur returns to Paris fully recovered from his war wounds, seeking to resume his sexual relationship with Eugenia rather than seeking revenge. Despite her fear that he had come to punish her for identifying him at his trial, he simply wants to continue where they left off, suggesting their connection, though rooted in coercion, was genuinely meaningful to him.

Earlier in the film, the chauffeur's repeated visits to Eugenia established a pattern of pursuit that the war interrupted.

Q6

Why did Evelyn suggest making love at the same hut where Eugenia was assaulted?

A.

Evelyn, as a free-spirited journalist, proposed the idea to deliberately provoke and challenge social taboos. She viewed the location, a place of trauma for Eugenia, as an opportunity to reclaim the space through pleasure rather than pain. This reflects her character as someone who embraces transgression and encourages Eugenia to do the same.

Q7

Why did Eugenia identify the chauffeur at his trial when it would expose her own affair?

A.

Eugenia reluctantly identified the chauffeur because his theft of the household silver had become undeniable and public. Though she knew this would expose her own infidelity, the scandal of theft was already inescapable. Her identification was pragmatic, she could not protect both her secret and the family's assets, so she chose to minimize the damage to the household's reputation.

Q8

Why does Eugenia care that the baron is dead when he abandoned her in Paris?

A.

The baron represented the only man Eugenia had willingly offered herself to, a moment of genuine desire and choice in her life. His death means that possibility for connection is permanently lost, leaving her with only the coercive relationship with the chauffeur and the complicated dynamic with Raimondo. It underscores her emotional emptiness despite multiple sexual encounters.
