In the port city of Cochin, a tangle of lives unfolds as ambition, love, and desperation pull people in different directions.

Kochuthresia, a prostitute who services foreign ship captains, lives for her daughter Rosie; her husband has died, leaving her with little means to support them.

Rosario Sayipu, an Anglo-Indian officer on a ship, brings Kochuthresia to the attention of ship captains, hinting at possibilities beyond the current struggle.

Peter, Rosario's son, is a fisherman who owns a boat and is deeply in love with Rosie, though his romantic life also includes other Anglo-Indian women.

Hamza, who earns a living by selling smuggled goods from ships, loves Rosie, but her heart remains fixed on Peter.

Rosario discovers the relationship between Peter and Rosie and opposes it. Despite his objections, Peter continues to see Rosie.

Rosie realizes Peter's other relationships and ends their romance, turning toward Hamza for companionship.

Then the Christmas nativity song Shantharathri Thirurathri plays.

This awakens Peter's envy, and he threatens to kill Hamza and Rosie.

Hamza and Rosie's marriage is arranged, but a day before the wedding, Peter takes Rosie to his boat and tries to rape her. Hamza intervenes, and a violent confrontation follows.

Peter stabs Hamza and throws him into the sea. The film closes with Rosie mourning Hamza's death.
