The film weaves death throughout Smolder’s surreal homage to Belgian painter Antoine Wiertz, a Hieronymus Bosch‑style artist famed for massive, gore‑filled canvases depicting humans in varied torments. Smolder re‑imagines a conventional documentary, fragmenting it with quotations from the deceased painter and intermittent commentary from a historian, offering brief insights into Wiertz’s life.
