Thirteen Lives

The boys decided to explore Tham Luang cave after their football practice on June 23, 2018. The heavy rains that flooded the cave were completely unexpected and fell outside the normal monsoon season, catching everyone by surprise. The group had no warning that the cave system would flood so rapidly.

Assistant coach Ekkaphon Chanthawong accompanied the twelve boys on their cave exploration. As the adult responsible for the team that day, he went with them into the cave, which ultimately trapped him alongside the boys for 18 days.

British divers Rick Stanton and John Volanthen navigated through the flooded cave system, reaching a T-junction and ultimately Chamber 9, approximately 2500 meters from the entrance. There they discovered all thirteen boys and their coach alive on Day 9 of the rescue operation.

The boys had to be sedated because the 2.5-kilometer underwater dive back to the cave entrance was terrifying and potentially life-threatening. Without sedation, panic could have caused them to thrash, remove their dive masks, or struggle against the divers, making escape impossible. Dr. Richard Harris provided the anesthesia expertise for this critical aspect of the rescue.

Saman Kunan, a former Thai Navy Seal, tragically drowned on Day 15 while delivering supplies inside the cave. His death occurred during a supply mission and highlighted the extreme dangers faced by all rescue divers. The film honors his sacrifice at the end.

A water technician discovered issues with sinkholes on the mountain above the cave. With support from local farmers, the rescue team redirected water by diverting sinkholes, though this required destroying crops. In total, approximately 56 million gallons of water were pumped or diverted from the cave.

The rescue was extremely dangerous because the dive route was 2.5 kilometers through narrow, flooded passages with zero visibility. The boys had never dived before and faced panic, low oxygen levels, and the constant threat of rising water. Any mistake could prove fatal for both the boys and the divers.

The boys were trapped for 18 days before being successfully rescued. They were discovered alive on Day 9, and the actual rescue operation to bring them out safely began on Day 16.

After the boys were found on Day 9, rescue teams faced several delaying factors: water levels were still too high for a safe dive, oxygen was running dangerously low, and extensive planning was needed for the complex sedation and diving procedure. The death of Saman Kunan on Day 15 also caused the team to pause and reassess safety protocols.

Tham Luang cave system is extremely deep, with Chamber 3 located 800 meters from the entrance and Chamber 9 about 2500 meters deep. The passages include a stalactite tunnel and T-junction, all of which became flooded with zero visibility during the monsoon. Divers had to navigate these narrow passages while pulling or carrying the boys.

Vernon Unsworth, a local British caver with extensive knowledge of the Tham Luang cave system, provided crucial assistance to the rescue teams. His detailed mapping of the cave on paper helped divers understand the complex layout and navigate through the flooded passages.

After discovering the boys, Rick Stanton and John Volanthen realized the rescue required specialized expertise. They called in Dr. Richard Harris (an anesthesiologist with cave diving experience), along with Chris Jewell and Jason Mallinson, to handle the complex task of sedating and transporting each boy through the flooded passages.

Governor Narongsak Osatanakorn led the coordination of the entire rescue operation. He made critical decisions, including when to allow divers to attempt the perilous dive despite Navy SEALs needing more preparation time, and ultimately gave permission for the rescue operation on Day 16.
