The ending of The Unfamiliar delivers a series of devastating betrayals that completely upend the lives of its central characters. Throughout the season, Meret and Simon have been on the run, trying to protect their daughter Nina while evading Josef, a Russian officer with a vendetta stemming from a botched intelligence operation sixteen years prior. The couple had been tasked with turning Josef by using a BND agent named Katya to seduce him, but the plan backfired when Katya became pregnant with his child. That child turned out to be Nina, a secret Meret and Simon have kept for years while raising her as their own.
