Macauley, Bryan Brown, is an itinerant rural worker and fighter—often described as a swagman—who unexpectedly finds himself stepping into the responsibility of caring for a child. A loner who once left the city for the open road, he drifts into a small country town and, among the dust and routines of farm life, begins to kindle a complicated romance with Lily Noni Hazlehurst, the daughter of the local butcher. Their budding attraction is halted by a jealous rival and a misunderstanding, and before long Macauley is back on the road, chasing work in a traveling carnival where his fists and his stubborn independence carry him from one town to the next.

When he stops again in an old town, Macauley hopes for a chance to reconnect with Lily, only to discover that she is now married. The news is a heavy blow, and in a moment of upheaval he turns to a fellow carnival worker, Marge Lorna Lesley, agreeing to marry her and to move to the city. Lily herself arrives at the hospital and promises to stay by Buster’s side, sparking a charged scene in which love, duty, and the future all hinge on a single, decisive moment.
