Laura Reynolds, (Elizabeth Taylor), is a free-spirited, unwed mother who makes a quiet life for herself and her young son Danny in an isolated beach house along the windswept shores of Big Sur, California. She earns a modest living as an artist and chooses to home-school Danny, believing regular school would pressure him to conform to restrictive norms before he’s ready. The pair move through their days with a gentle rhythm, Laura hoping to shield her son’s innocence even as he grows curious about the world around him. Danny’s temperament is lively and intelligent, and his mother encourages his questions, learning alongside him and protecting him from judgment.

Danny’s mischief lands them in trouble with the law on more than one occasion. There are two incidents that the judge takes seriously: one involves an inappropriate brush with a girl his age, and another sees him shooting a fawn to test whether it’s a “fun” experience. Laura sees these as natural expressions of curiosity and conscience rather than delinquency, and she fights to frame his behavior within a compassionate, learning-minded context. Hendricks’s intrusion adds social danger to the personal pain already threading through the Hewitts’ household. Claire initially grieves what her marriage has become and the possibility of losing the life she and Edward built; the two of them eventually begin a difficult, candid conversation about their own paths and whether their love can survive the shifting currents of honesty and responsibility.
