There’s Only One Jimmy Grimble

Jimmy, a shy teenager from Oldham, signs up for the school football team and begins to face bullying from Gordon and his gang. Football becomes a refuge, and his love for City gives him a spark of ambition. The team is coached by Eric Wirral, who cares little for winning and is undermined by Gordon and his boastful father Ken.

Alice lends Jimmy a pair of old boots that she claims are magical, and Jimmy reluctantly accepts the gift. He places them in a rubbish skip on his way home, unaware of the trouble to come. Gordon steals the boots and tosses them into a passing bin truck, threatening Jimmy's chance to play until he retrieves them.

Jimmy comes on as a substitute in a waterlogged game against Wreckingham. He scores a goal from his own half with his first touch, boosting his confidence. The boot's supposed magic seems real as he begins to shine and outplay Gordon.

A club security steward directs Jimmy to a house next to Maine Road. There he discovers that Mr Wirral is a former City player who had a hat-trick against United in his playing days. This revelation rekindles Wirral's passion for the game as he struggles to rekindle his former glory.

Jimmy's performances win over Psycho and the rest of the squad, softening some of the earlier hostility. The Headmaster orders Wirral to hand coaching duties to Ken, who favours a blunt plan to ‘pass it to Gordon’. The dynamic shift introduces new friction within the team.

In the half-time break, the opposition coach recognises Wirral as the City hat-trick hero from his past. The team sees through Ken's limited tactics and rejects the arrangement. Wirral is restored as the coach for the second half, inspired by the revelation.

With Wirral back at the helm, the team plays with renewed energy and cohesion. They respond to the challenge with improved form and secure a crucial win. Gordon's disruptive influence fades as the team regains confidence on the field.

Donna begins dating her new partner Johnny Two Dogs, a boastful motorcycle rider who pretends to be tough. Jimmy struggles to adjust to this new family dynamic while clinging to football as his constant.

Donna insists Johnny takes Jimmy to a Manchester City game, echoing what Jimmy's dad was like. Before the match, Johnny gets into an altercation with a hooligan in the pub, showing he isn't the hard man he wants to be. Jimmy begins to see the gap between appearance and reality.

On the way to invite Alice to the final, Jimmy notices demolition starting on her squatted row of houses and halts the workmen. When he searches for her later, he discovers she has frozen to death outside. Donna suspects Johnny's priorities as their relationship strains further.

Ahead of the final and with a United scout watching, Ken warns of removing Jimmy’s involvement to protect Gordon’s spotlight. Gordon steals Jimmy's boots and throws them into the canal, leaving the team facing a 2-0 deficit at half-time. The players refuse to play without Jimmy's presence on the pitch.

During halftime, a blind programme seller reveals himself as Robbie Brewer, a former City mascot who never played for City. He explains that the boots were a gift from Alice, clearing Jimmy to trust his own ability. The revelation reinvigorates Jimmy as he prepares for the restart.

Jimmy quickly scores in the second half to ignite the comeback. He then assists Gordon for an equaliser, before carrying the ball from his own half and delivering a decisive pass that ends with a final winning goal. The team celebrates as the comeback culminates in victory.

In the tunnel, Ken pushes to sign Gordon for Manchester United, but Jimmy declares his own dream: Man City. The scout offers an alternative to the goalkeeper instead, underscoring Jimmy's loyalty to City. The moment seals Jimmy's resolve to stay true to his own path.

Jimmy meets Sara in the tunnel and shares a kiss as the team celebrates their win with Mr Wirral. Donna and Harry watch from the crowd, reconciled and proud of Jimmy's triumph. The victory marks a personal and team milestone, with Wirral guiding them to a renewed belief in themselves.
