A devout zealot sees his rigid worldview crumble when he falls for a woman and murders her in jealous rage. Tormented by guilt, he desperately tries to rationalize the killing and find peace as his life unravels. Meanwhile, a police inspector shadows Barraut, convinced of his guilt but refusing to arrest him, waiting for his faith to break.
