The Wild and the Willing (1962) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

A lively group of university men soak in campus life—dances, late nights, and the constant chase for romance. Harry [Ian McShane] Brown is a bit rebellious and fiercely protective, and he’s dating Josie [Samantha Eggar]. His roommate, Phil Corbett [John Hurt], is a quiet outsider who secretly loves Sarah [Katherine Woodville], though she has started seeing someone else who she believes is more suitable.

As the story unfolds, Harry’s world becomes entangled with Virginia, the unhappy wife of Professor George Chown [Paul Rogers]. The professor remains aloof and resists divorce because he dreams of a knighthood, while Virginia worries about her future and turns Harry down when he asks her to run away with him.

Frustration pushes Harry toward a bold Rag Week stunt: a nocturnal climb up the campus tower to hoist a flag. He struggles to assemble a team, and most friends opt out for various reasons. Phil steps forward to join, hoping to stay connected to campus life, even though he’s not a natural climber. At first Harry worries about the risks Phil poses, but he eventually agrees to take him along.

Andrew Gilby [Jeremy Brett], a sharp, ambitious student who once vied for Virginia’s affections, grows resentful of Harry and notifies the university authorities. The teachers respond not with fear but with concern, calling the fire brigade as a crowd gathers to watch the spectacle. The ascent is tense but successful: the two reach the top and raise the banner. Yet on the way down, Phil’s footing slips. Harry clings to him with all his strength, but Phil falls to his death.

Harry is expelled—“sent down”—from the university. During a final visit to Professor Chown, the professor concedes that Harry’s paper was brilliant, but the stunt has cost him a scholarship and an academic career. Josie finds Harry at the bus station and begs to come along, but he refuses, believing he doesn’t want to hurt anyone else. The film closes with Reggie, Johnny Sekka, singing a ballad about Harry and Josie, marking a somber, bittersweet end to a turbulent chapter.
