A bleak, moving lament that resists Western narrative conventions, set in 1937 Stalinist Georgia. A mother branded an “enemy of the people” is sent to a Siberian labor camp, where frail women must trek across the frozen tundra for food and shelter. Meanwhile her daughter, placed in an orphanage, escapes, returns home and encounters a KGB officer who protects her, forging a tense bond of suspicion, need and reluctant attraction.
