Van Paemel, a farmer on Baron de Wilde’s estate, suffers a cascade of tragedies. His gentle son Désire is left crippled after a hunting accident; eldest son Eduard joins socialist strikes; daughter Cordule defies him with poacher Masco; youngest daughter Romanie, a castle servant, is seduced by the baron’s heir Maurice and bears his child. Son Kamiel is drafted, leaving the farm shorthanded, and the family is evicted for unpaid rent. Over time three children emigrate to the USA, one becomes a nun, another dies, leaving only Van Paemel and his wife.
