In 1967, a young boy found himself entranced as California’s Governor Ronald Reagan launched into a vehement tirade against the environmental movement. This moment would prove pivotal for Dylan Riggs, a logger grappling with the pressure to support his sick wife while battling the rising tide of environmental activism. Faced with a determined group of tree-hugging protesters refusing to allow him to clear the forest, tensions boiled over, leading to a dramatic confrontation. In a fit of frustration, the boy unleashed his anger on one of the activists using a chainsaw, resulting in his subsequent admission to a mental institution.
Fast-forward 39 years into the future, where a group of friends—Joey, Ivan, Samantha, Linda, Jade, and Jack—set out for the American Free Love Festival, reminiscent of the legendary Woodstock. Their trip initially went off without a hitch until a pitstop at a gas station turned chaotic as they confronted a gang of roughnecks. Enter Gus, a veteran fighter, who intervened, breaking the arm of one ambiguous thug and throwing the group into disarray.
Meanwhile, Frank Baker was hard at work making sure the festival went off without a hitch, despite warnings from local police officer Buzz Hall about the dark incidents that marred last year’s event. Ignoring the cautions, the festival proceeded, but a chilling event unfolded when a festival-goer mysteriously disappeared into the woods, meeting a brutal end at the hands of an unidentified assailant. The following day, Linda and Joey ventured into the woods, hoping to deepen their relationship, only to be ambushed by the very same roughnecks now armed with paintball guns.
As the festival spiraled into chaos, news broke of a horrific discovery: a headless body hanging from a tree—a stark reminder of the violence that had occurred. Officer Buzz Hall ordered the festival’s abrupt suspension, infuriating Baker. Amidst the turmoil, Samantha ventured out searching for Joey’s keys, only to stumble upon her abusive ex-boyfriend Jimmy’s car. Driven by fear, she rushed back to their van, where she was met with the horrifying sight of Jack and Jade’s bodies. Just as she confronted Jimmy regarding his connection to the murders, chaos reigned; Ronald Reagan returned to claim two more victims: Jimmy and Ivan—forcing Samantha to flee in terror.
As the plot thickened, Buzz became increasingly convinced that Dylan Riggs was behind the gruesome events and set out to confront him at his isolated cabin. Upon arrival, he stumbled upon an unsettling scene that appeared to show Dylan in the act of dismembering the bodies, further intensifying Buzz’s suspicion. Their ensuing chase culminated in Dylan accidentally triggering one of his punji stick traps, resulting in an agonizing demise.
Meanwhile, Reagan was hot on Baker’s trail. However, Baker skillfully evaded him for a time, even taking refuge in an outhouse. But Reagan’s relentless pursuit led him back to Samantha, only to be interrupted by Buzz’s timely arrival, who seemed to put an end to Reagan with a barrage of gunfire. This moment of respite was short-lived, as Reagan surprisingly re-emerged, battered but far from beaten.
Seizing the chance to exact her own vengeance, Samantha struck Reagan with a hammer until he succumbed to unconsciousness. As she removed her disguise, the true identity of the unsuspected killer was unearthed: Gus, the older man from the gas station, who held deep, tangled ties with Dylan. This startling revelation left the audience in shock.
The next morning, law enforcement escorted Samantha out of the woods, yet an eerie discovery awaited Officer Buzz—Gus’s body was missing from the scene. Meanwhile, Baker emerged from his hiding spot in the outhouse, blissfully unaware of the impending doom. Deep in the woods, Gus launched a terrifying chainsaw attack that left Baker slain, reminding all that the line between justice and horror is often perilously thin.
