In a single tragic instant, 12‑year‑old Arnold Hillerman is left alone, his silence deafening. He and his 17‑year‑old brother Eugene live on a Montana farm with their parents, hostile uncle and grandfather. When an accident with Arnold’s gun kills Eugene, Arnold is emotionally numb and cannot understand his feelings. He must face his grief and learn to communicate with his devastated family, while they all try to accept the changed boy.
