The Spirit of ’76

The movie switches between two time periods: the United States in 1976 during the Bicentennial celebration, and a dystopian 2176 where recorded history has been erased by a magnetic storm. The time travelers originally aim for 1776 but a malfunction lands them in 1976 instead.

The three time travelers are Adam-11 (David Cassidy), Chanel-6 (Olivia d'Abo), and Heinz-57 (Geoff Hoyle). They are tasked with retrieving America's heritage from the past. Adam-11 and Chanel-6 form a partnership to navigate 1976 and keep the mission on track, while Heinz-57 adds humor to the mission.

Rodney Snodgrass is a science whiz and UFO enthusiast who believes the time travelers are aliens. He enters their 'UFO' in his high school's Bicentennial Science Fair, hoping to win the prize. His curiosity and competitive nature create obstacles but ultimately helps spur the plan to fix the time machine.

Eddie Trojan is Rodney's disco-loving brother who pursues Chanel-6 for his own pleasure. His flamboyant devotion to 1970s disco culture provides comic relief and serves as a social foil during the time travelers' misadventures in the 1970s.

Tommy Sears and Chris Johnson are two teenagers who help repair the time machine and guide the travelers through the 1970s. Tommy is selfless and good-hearted, while Chris contributes practical know-how and courage, keeping morale high as the group navigates the strange era.

The time machine malfunctions during the journey, sending the travelers to 1976 instead of their intended destination of 1776. Despite the error, they persist in treating 1976 as the ideal era they're seeking, which becomes the source of the film's satirical humor.
